Summer in Australia

An Australian summer doesn't begin on December the 1st, or the summer solstice. It doesn't begin with the summer school holidays, or your first surf after winter, or the sound of the first cicadas (an insect much like cricket or locusts that chirp loudly in the warmer moths) or the first night you wake up and smell the smoke of distant bushfires so strong that you think the building next door might be on fire, or the first barbie (Barbeque) of the season.

No, an Aussie summer begns with the first ball of the first cricket test match. And it's an even better summer when once every four years the English team visit. This morning, at 11am Australian Eastern Summer Time, summer began.

And so far, it's going very nicely.

Makes me long to be at the Gabba with 'the boys' from my family, watching it happen. At least the cricket is on (several) tv(s) here at work - something I've not had for many years :)

You're right, it has started very nicely indeed - my only complaint (and it's a half-hearted one at that) is it's ruined my concentration on work.

My productivity today is about zero... But whats with the bad graphics (on the telecast)...

Hey Ben - my wife Sara is a sports broadcaster fo the ABC - thogh on mternity leave - her job used to be producing test cricket at the grund or watching it on TV. I'm sure the Fox guys will tell you how tough that can be :-)

Pat - I've got the sound down, (I much prefer the ABC to the TV commentary, though Slats is good) and wifi laptop in front of the TV - while writing a chapter of my book. The secret is having the sund down!.

Tuna - the top left hand side widget with score etc is just about unreadable, and I have good eyesight! And it's all ugly as $%%^

Then again TV sports gaphics are always ugly, and have por signal to noise ratios

Was thinking you'd be writing about summer but it's really about cricket.

My workmates have this TV on in the staff room. Guess what's on it? Cricket!

and it just keeps getting better - if you are an Aussie that is, not so hot for the poms

Well, it ended quite nicely too, didn't it?! Bring on the second test... let's hope the poms can put up a bit of a challenge next time.

Having travelled extensively throughout Australia, it is remarkable the amount of history the place has for such a young country. And EVERYTHING is so beautiful, from the pristine beaches, to the mountains and even the tree-less desert and outback. There are a lot of wonderful stories that the place has to offer. Bring on the cricket
