iPod touch dead - seriously unhappy!

Picked up my touch last night from where I put it down the night before, working fine.

Dead as a doornail :-(

Sadly, the nearest Apple Service Centre is an hour away, and I'll not likely be going near for a week or so.

Not a happy camper.

Bad week for Apple kit round our parts. My 17" powerbook which Sara inherited about a year ago had an unscheduled meeting with the floor. At least the HD and contents are salvageable.

Looking forward to better times in the hardware department

Lame, that's not a good thing to happen! I'd be really sad if my iPod touch died, I'm dependent on it!

Umm...at the risk of being yelled at - it's not the battery? I only ask because I have twice thought my ipod dead, then it turned out to be so flat that nothing would show up for a while. But did, eventually, after some charging.

left it to charge overnight - some weird screen cycling goes on when I have it plugged into firewire or usb, but that's all.

Did it get better? I have just bought one and you have got me a bit worried!

Apple replaced it right away - took it into an Apple certified repairer, took them 5 nano seconds to verify it was a deceased iPod - then had to wait a week sadly for the replacement.

So not unimpressed with that response. You can apparently post them to Apple, and they'll repair or replace and post them back - which helps folks like me some distance from a repair shop - I didn't know that until after I got it repaired.

Yeah, the same problem happened to me. I sent it for one of the shop technician but he managed to get it fixed. I didn’t know what he did but he charged me $30 just for the service charge.

Same issue with me. I was listening to it docked in my Bose speakers. I took it out and carried it to the car. No response whatsoever. I have tried charging, connecting to computer - nothing... I bought it from Best Buy about 3 mos ago!!!

I found the following troubleshooting page on Apple's website. I found it very helpful. I finally got mine to reset!

exact same thing. It went dead in the middle of being used. Took it back to Argos and swapped and within 3 days new one did exact same thing. Second time I know it was charged enough to use but it was low.

I then checked out website above and found that if battery gets low it cannot even reset itself so you need to leave on charge for a while then reset by pressing on/of and menue together for 6 seconds.

Hope it helps.

My model is 32gb 2.2

Same thing happened to me, and what the last couple of people did worked! Plugged in, did not regonize, hold both buttons, after a bit, and it's back... WHEW

Same thing happened to me recently, so I let it charge for awhile and it started working again.

Yes, holding both buttons works. Mine took about 15-20 seconds to recognize though but it finally came back on. I was worried I would have to send it in and i just got it a couple days ago. Thank You very much.

i just got an ipod touch used the other day from an out of town relative. It was dead and when i plugged it into my imac it did not appear in itunes and wouldnt charge. It just has the apple logo on the screen continuously, anyone know whats wrong?

I found an ipod touch 8GB the other day and the battery is dead. My roommmate played around with it and said it charged, but only to 10% but now it won't even do that.
Is there a repair place that will replace the battery without needing proof of ownership?

My 16Gb Ipod Touch died this past Monday. I was using it just fine. Laid it down on my desk just to go get some lunch, and when I came back, it wouldn't turn on. I just got the Apple logo. Thinking it could be the battery I plugged it into my PC, not only did it not charge, but iTunes didn't recognize it either.

I've tried everything since: resseting it via the Power/Menu buttons, upgrading my iTunes version, leaving it all night long plugged in to charge... I even took it to the nearest Apple Authorized Center (they limited themselves to declare it officially dead, and tell me my warraty had expired). Nothing worked.

Any geeks out there with ideas? I miss my iPod very much and right now I just can't afford to replace it. And certainly won't buy any Apple products again, if they just die after a couple years. These are expensive products! I expect them to last!

The good thing about your information is that it is explicit enough for students to grasp. Thanks for your efforts in spreading academic knowledge.

Took my second Itouch back to Apple store today. First of all they said that allthough they had replaced the last one with a brand new one, it was only guaranteed for 90 days and as that had expired they wanted £160.00!
Both times it had been the same fault (completely dead).
Eventually got them to agree to replace free of charge then they told me they were out of stock! There must be a problem with the power/batteries on these machines that Apple don't want to admit to .

I had my touch with me on an airplane a week ago, the day before I updated all the software on it. Then mid-flight the volume started screwing up. Like it was turning up all the way on it's own. Nothing touching the sides or screen. Then it turned the volume all the way down. I fought with it for a little bit, then figured, reset it. So I shut it off. Then I went to turn it back on, the apple screen appeared, and then the red bar for shutting it off appeared. I swiped my finger across, it shut off again. And now it won't turn on, nothing recognizes it (Laptop, wall charger, ihome). I can't figure out what's wrong with it! Can anyone help me?
